About TIPS

TIPS Publishing Services is a full-range book production company, offering composition, copy editing, proofreading, indexing, design, and ebook conversion. We have both attention to detail and passion that will serve clients and, with over 35 years in the industry, skills and expertise you can trust with confidence.

We work with established publishing houses, companies, and individual authors. We have the knowledge, resources, and qualifications to provide individual freelance services or complete packaging.

TIPS has had successful partnerships with university presses such as Duke and Georgetown, with corporations like GlaxoSmithKline and LexisNexis, and with professional associations like the American Psychological Association and the American Nurses Association. Work samples from our extensive portfolio can be provided upon request.

Robert Kern

Owner

Robert Kern's publishing career began 1985 with Prentice Hall. In 1996, after working there for over a decade, he relocated to Chapel Hill with Ventana Communications. In 1997, he founded TIPS Publishing Services to provide full-service book production and packaging to computer trade publishers. Over the years, TIPS expanded its client base and now works with academic, trade, professional, and scientific clients.  Robert lives in Hillsborough with his wife, Terry, and two labs, Huck and Sawyer.

Claire Cin

Senior Editor

Claire Cin is from Cary, North Carolina. She is a graduate from UNC Chapel Hill, with degrees in Communication Media Studies and Music Composition, along with a minor in Mathematics. In her free time she enjoys reading, writing music, and taking long walks with her dog, Bailey.

Patrick Hunter

Senior Editor

Patrick is a graduate of UNC Chapel Hill with degrees in Creative Writing and Communications. He is an experienced editor at TIPS and continues to write in his free time. He is very scared of horses.

Caroline Matthews

Editor

​Caroline Matthews is a senior at UNC Chapel Hill from Fayetteville, NC. She is completing her second internship with TIPS and while majoring in English and Comparative Literature with a concentration in Writing, Editing, and Digital Publishing. In her free time, she likes to read, crochet, and get coffee with friends.
